Another
new innovative product born of the cell phone market is the King
of Clubs PC Card from Guelph-based Ositech Communications Inc.
The device uses Ositech’s proprietary CellFlex
technology to enable laptop and PDA users to remotely connect
wirelessly to the Internet from wherever they are through their
cell phones, regardless of whether they are in analogue or digital
territory. (Estimates are hard to come by but it’s fairly safe
to say that digital networks are available mainly in Canadian
urban city centers, with consumers in the more rural environments
having to rely on analogue signals.) Ositech’s CellFlex
technology within the PC Card provides seamless connections
without the need for the user to reconfigure his communications
device in the field.
"Originally, we designed the product for business people
who had to travel from place to place," explains Rehana
Dhirani, Marketing Associate for Ositech Communications Inc.
"But we’re seeing a lot of interest from other groups of
people, like RVers, boaters and hunters. There’s interest from
pretty much everybody who travels between home and wherever and
needs to connect to the Internet."
To date, the King
of Clubs PC Card works with selected Nokia
and Motorola cell phone models but Ositech is currently at work on
broadening that list. The PC Card comes as part of a complete
connection kit and includes everything an individual needs to
connect his cell phone to his laptop to get online, including
installation and configuration software for quick and easy set-up.
The kit bears a suggested list price of US$149. For laptops
without internal modems, Ositech offers the King
of Clubs PC
Card, complete with CellFlex
and a 56K modem.
"The other important aspect about the King of Clubs is
that we’ve prepared our product for new advances in cellular
technology like 3G," adds Dhirani. "Our card uses the
transmission technology built into the cellular phone, and is
designed to be upgradeable to work with newly emerging handsets
and wireless networks."
