GUELPH -- Whether you need to check your
email while cruising North America's high ways, or log onto your
company website in the office of a potential client, a small
telecommunications company in Guelph has communication solutions
for people on the go.
The uses for the products made by Ositech
Communications Inc. are multiple. Weather researchers took
measurements of all weather parameters inside a tornado using a
product while out in the field. West Virginia's emergency response
unit used Ositech's CellFlex technology to communicate during
floods. The Canadian government office that supervises and
regulates banks, trust and insurance companies selected Ositech's
DPI technology to help solve a mobile communication problem.
Digital (PBX) phone systems have always been
more prevalent in offices and hotels than analog systems. Since
conventional modems allow online connections only through analog
phone lines, checking the Internet at a client's site can be
difficult. Ositech's DPI technology is a solution for any mobile
workforce, since it allows mobile users to make a seamless
connection easily and conveniently through digital (PBX) phones
found in most offices and hotels worldwide.
When they checked return forms on their laptop
wireless devices, Ositech's staff discovered a vertical market -- RVers, people who live in their RVs year-round, says Walter Hare,
marketing manager.
"One of our biggest markets is RVers.
There are a million on the roads in North America," he says.
These people like the flexibility of Ositech's CellFlex technology: it allows them to use a cell phone to connect their
laptop computer to the Internet anywhere. Two other vertical
markets are truckers and those within the medical industry who
require mobile technology.
"The difference between CellFlex
and any
other product, is ours works in both digital and analogue areas.
Lots of parts of North America do not have digital data turned
on," Hare says.
The majority of Ositech's sales are now in
North America, with distributors in Europe accounting for ten to
15 percent of sales and one large offshore client that
incorporates their products without the Ositech name.
Ositech Communications Inc. started 13 years
ago and now has 24 employees, but it once had three times as many.
"Things have changed in our market and we've had to
restructure to stay competitive," Hare says.
The company produced the first fully internal
Data + Fax Modem and Ethernet LAN combination adapter in 1991.
Then in 1994, Ositech introduced its line of high performance Type
II multi-function PC Cards. These are about the size of a credit
card and somewhat thicker. Named the Trumpcard series, they
quickly won many awards of excellence including two Windows
Magazine Win100 awards, two PC Computing MVP Finalist awards and
editor's awards for various products. The Trumpcard line has
continued to evolve with the times. TBE
