An Introduction to the
Mechanics of Wireless Data
This section will give a basic outline of the
mechanics working behind the various forms of Wireless
Data; Analog, Digital and Ositech's exclusive CellFlex
Dual Mode Data solution.
Typical Wireline Data
Connections
|
Wireline/Landline connections are setup
by dialing out using your laptop or desktop’s modem,
connected (via phone line) to the PSTN (Public Switched
Telephone Network), and then routed to your ISP (Internet
Service Provider) (see diagram to the right).
• The Analog Modem Pool (within the
ISP) then completes the data connection and starts the
Internet session.
• Since the connection is only there for the
duration of the call, it is referred to as a Switched
Virtual Connection.

Analog Cellular Data
Connections
|
Analog Cellular Data connections are
the same as Landline connections except that cellular
transmissions replace the landline connection to the PSTN
(see diagram to the right).
• Analog Cellular Data connections use
the laptop’s modem to send data over any analog cellular
network.
• These connections increase the
places you can
connect from, but cellular connections are slower than
landline connections.
• Analog Data coverage is widespread and available
in most geographic regions.
• Analog Cellular Data connections are Network
Independent. No support from the Cellular network is
required as the network is unaware of the nature of the
call; voice or data.

Digital Cellular Data
Connections
|
|
Digital Cellular Data connections are a Cellular
Network-dependant feature and will only work on Cellular
Networks supporting this type of connections. Unlike
Analog Cellular Data connections, a Digital Cellular Data
connection uses the virtual
modem located in your cellular
phone
to talk to a modem in the cellular network. It then
passes on to a cellular gateway where an analog modem
dials 
out the actual number for the ISP through the PSTN
network and the connection
completes as in the analog
cellular connection above. (see diagram below).
• Digital Cellular Data connections are
more reliable, more secure and can be faster than Analog
Data connections.
• Digital Data coverage is not as widespread as
Analog data, but covers most larger metropolitan areas.
