CellFlex aids storm chasers to be at the right place, at the right time

With Ositech’s CellFlex, storm chasers can obtain important weather data while in the field

Guelph, Ontario, September 10, 2002: There is a first time for everything. On May 7th of 2002, senior research engineer Tim Samaras and Brad Carter, made history in Kansas. It was the first time ever that measurements of all weather parameters were taken of inside a tornado core. By deploying probes in the path of the approaching storm, the chasers were able to measure the barometric pressure drop, wind speed and direction, temperature and relative humidity and even record a video of the storm. The success of this venture can also be attributed to Ositech’s CellFlex™ technology that allowed weather data to be obtained live right in the field.

Since the weather conditions may change almost instantaneously, up-to-date weather data are imperative to the success of finding and documenting a storm. Prior to mobile technologies becoming common and affordable, storm chasers used to acquire weather data by listening to the radio, calling friends via a payphone, or even watching a TV while trying to locate a tornado. It was a cumbersome task and despite all the efforts, more often than not, storm chasers would learn about a storm’s existence from other sources only after the fact. Today CellFlex™ technology gives mobile users access to up-to-date weather information from trusted sources on the Web from everywhere.

Ositech’s combination of analog and digital data capabilities in one PC card provides storm chasers with the flexibility to access online data anywhere an applicable cellular network exists. Tim Samaras is pleased with the auto-detection feature of CellFlex™ that determines what cellular coverage area, digital or analog, the mobile user is in. This allows more energy directed towards the actual storm chasing and not the cell phone configuration.

Tim Samaras has had experience with a number of cellular modems. After learning about Ositech’s CellFlex™, he has been utilizing the King of Hearts PC card with a Motorola Startac phone and service from Verizon. For storm chasers, according to Tim Samaras, Ositech’s King of Hearts PC Card is “a dream come true.”
